String Orchestra Compositions
Once Upon A Day : July 7, 2021
Length 3:53
I started the sketch of this composition on June 18. 2021. and the sketch was pretty much done by June 27th. I didn't have any any specific theme, motive texture, rhythm concepts in mind, I just started "doodling" around on my piano. Then things started to happen and I one thing lead to the next. After about 20 measure into the song it started to tell me where to go. Playing around with variations of the themes, rhythms, etc, I tried to create a A-B-A form without changing tempos of key. As it ended up, Once Upon A Day this song was created!

Kaleidoscope : Oct 2020
Length: 3:57
I started this composition while visiting Sedona Az. Enjoying the sunshine, clean air and friendly surrounds. Hiking through the canyons, cliffs in the Sedona area is simply fantastic and beautiful!
As usual, the titles to my compositions come after I'm well into the composition. The first 4 measures gave me the concept of the entire piece, and so it was.
The tune reflects, to me, an audio representation of what a Kaleidoscope what "sound like" in relation to what the visual would be as one looks through and spins a Kaleidoscope.
Contemplation : Jan. 2019
Length: 6:30
This Composition was completed in 6 days. With a few minor tweaks here and there. I was thinking about using B min. for the tonal center. After I sketched out the first five measures, the composition started to "talk" to me. Leading me in a direction where I wasn't quite sure where I was going to end up. But the gentle, smooth conversation was speaking to me for some strange reason and I just followed "its" pathway.
Pathway : 2017
Length: 5:15
Written for Vintage High School String Orchestra fall of 2017.
While teaching for 33 years in high school, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach in the arts. Instrumental Music to be specific. While doing so, I noticed some very obvious signs from many generations of students. In general, they simply do not know what they want to do. They are placed in an institution in hope of discovering something they might be interested in. Meanwhile, taking those core classes that will give them the scaffolding to pursue their unknown interests.
This piece starts out as that, unknown student. As it develops, the student seems to discovers an "interest" and starts getting motivated, and begins down that pathway to discovery. Now that I'm retired, this composition encompasses “everyone” at all ages.
This was written for the Vintage High School String Orchestra. Simply to leave behind a "Thank you" to my Orchestra and wish them luck to their future in hopes that THEY will find their interests and passion.
Sketches in E minor: 2003
Simply useing Emin as the tonality I wrote this composition. One idea led to the next and the next thing Sketches was done.
A Walk Through The Fog - 2003
Haven't we all walked through some fog in our lives? Always looking for a little clearing......
(metaphorically speaking)
Flight 95 To Oakland - 2000
While in New York, visiting my wife, we were on our way back to the JFK Airport. The weather was soggy, traffic was bumper to bumper and frequently stopped at times. Needless to say I was was getting a bit nervous that I was going to miss my flight due to so much traffic.
Well I did arrive and pretty much walked straight out of the car and straight on to the JetBlue Flt 95 back to Oakland. While during the flight, I wrote this tune. The beginning allegro section was the rushing to on the plane, taxing out and taking off. The Andante section, we are finally at cruising altitude, all is good. The coda section is our decent into Oakland and finally landing! Mind you, this was pre-9-11. No security lines, etc. Check in and go!
I finally finished scoring it out and set it out in front of my string orchestra. So, between 2004 and 2017, my String Orchestra enjoyed playing the composition.
